Last Piece of the Puzzle

This is a demonstration grant that provides library service to Illinois citizens who reside in a specific “target area” that does not have tax-supported library service. For this grant, it is the people of Saline County who live within the Gallatin County school district.

There are four library districts in Saline County — Carrier Mills/Stonefort, Eldorado, Galatia and Harrisburg.  The boundaries of the library districts match the boundaries of the school districts of the same name.  However, there are approximately 39 square miles in Saline County where the residents are within the Gallatin County school district.  There are approximately 60 families represented in this area.

The “Last Piece of the Puzzle” grant will provide library service to the residents of the targeted area until June 30, 2008.  The first objective is to have at least one person in each household register for a library card.  The library cards enabe the new patrons to check out materials in various formats and use the library’s electronic resources such as FirstSearch, NetLibrary and TumbleBooks that are offered only to patrons of the Harrisburg District Library.

The target audience will receive a calendar by mail each month to remind them of the various programs offered at the library.  Since the beginning of the project, the actvities have included Norma Tillman, a private investigator; Charlene Ann Baumbich, author of the “Dearest Dorothy” series; and Brad Tassell, author and comedian.  As of the end of October, approximately 25% of the targeted families are now patrons of Harrisburg District Library.
